Becoming A Substance Abuse Counselor

A substance abuse counselor is someone who helps individuals when they are battling addiction. This is done by helping the individuals identify the behaviors and circumstances that lead to abusing substances and turning abusers toward a more productive set of behaviors and circumstances. It is one of the most challenging of all human service careers.

Many different schools offer associate degree and certificate programs that can get one started on the road to becoming a counselor. Most of these programs are closely related to courses in family counseling and psychology. This is good because abuse counselors have a very high burnout rate and the related courses allow them to change their focus while still helping people in crisis.

Most clinics that employ these individuals require a minimum of a Bachelor of Arts degree. All states require these individuals to be licensed. There are also many settings that require one to have a Master of Arts degree in order to be employable.

In practice, these individuals work one-on-one with individuals trying to break away from addiction. They usually work closely with physicians, social workers, family counselors, and even police in some situations. Their goal is to help move their clients from a state of chemical dependence to a state of complete functioning and becoming a contributing member of society again.

This task is often made more difficult by the fact that most of the clients are seen when in a crisis situation. There is also a certain bias among some professions that says addicts are completely responsible for their own situations. While this may have been true the first time they decided to abuse a substance, what followed was often the result of a physical dependence on that substance that the addict could not fight without help.

Being a substance abuse counseloris not easy. It is estimated that only about 20 percent of clients will actually benefit from the

help available and stop using completely. These individuals often move from living on the streets in squalor, to working in a productive job and rejoining mainstream society. The flip side of this is the number of clients who make little or no progress. All too often, addicts who are serious about getting control of their lives back end up dead as a result of an overdose or their body’s inability to tolerate the withdrawal of the drug. Others simply show little or no improvement.
